A ₹499 kurta on Easy Ship: what Amazon cuts

Amazon's rates, checked 14 October 2026. Standard level (where new sellers start). Before TCS and TDS, your own cost and your GST on the sale.

So on a ₹499 kurta that weighs 500 g packed, Amazon takes ₹78 in fees plus ₹14.04 GST on those fees, and sends ₹406.96, before TCS and TDS. A regular GST seller (not composition) can claim this GST back as input credit, with the marketplace's tax invoice. Ask your CA.

TCS and TDS are small taxes Amazon cuts and pays to the government in your name: ₹2.38 and ₹0.48 here, worked out on the price without its 5% GST. After them about ₹404.10 reaches your bank, the same figure the free Amazon calculator shows. You also owe GST on the sale itself, about ₹24 at 5% on most clothing; the calculator works that out with your price, weight and cost.

What the closing fee is

A fixed fee on every order, set by price band. Amazon counts the band on "the item price that is paid by the buyer (including any shipping or gift-wrap charges charged by the seller)". So if you charge ₹49 shipping on a ₹459 item, the band is for ₹508, not ₹459.

  • Easy Ship (Amazon's courier picks up from you): ₹2 up to ₹300, ₹23 from ₹301 to ₹500, ₹48 from ₹501 to ₹1,000, ₹79 above ₹1,000.
  • Self Ship (your own courier): ₹20, ₹26, ₹51 and ₹101 for the same bands. Amazon charges no shipping fee on Self Ship.

Referral fee: 0% up to ₹1,000

Since 16 March 2026 Amazon charges no referral fee on items priced up to ₹1,000 in 1,800+ categories, clothing, shoes and fashion jewellery included. Amazon's table says "<= 1,000", so an item at exactly ₹1,000 is still 0%. Above ₹1,000, the category's rate applies. For clothing:

  • Ethnic wear 16.5%, sarees and dress materials 15%
  • Dresses 19%, trousers, jeans and leggings 19%
  • Shirts 21%, men's T-shirts 23%, baby clothing 7%
  • Fashion jewellery 22.5%, shoes 8%

Worked example

Where the fees jump (closing fee and referral, before GST)

₹500 price₹301 to ₹500 band, referral 0%−₹23
₹501 price₹1 more on the price, ₹25 more in fees−₹48
₹1,000 priceReferral still 0% at exactly ₹1,000−₹48
₹1,200 ethnic wear16.5% of ₹1,200 = ₹198, plus ₹79 closing fee−₹277

Each row is a different price, not one sum. Easy Ship rates. Shipping goes by weight, not price, so it is not in these rows.

So a price just over ₹500 or just over ₹1,000 can leave you with less than one just under it. Check the band before you set ₹501 or ₹1,050.

Easy Ship charges by weight

Amazon calls Easy Ship shipping the "weight handling fee". Since 16 March 2026 Easy Ship charges a flat fee by packed weight, with no local or national split, for standard-size parcels. The rate also depends on your STEP level (Amazon's seller levels). New sellers start at Standard; Basic is the level below it:

  • Standard: ₹55 for the first 500 g, ₹75 up to 1 kg, ₹112 up to 2 kg, then ₹34 for each extra kg up to 5 kg and ₹18 for each kg after that.
  • Basic: ₹59, ₹79 and ₹116 for the same weights.
  • Advanced and Premium: ₹53, ₹73 and ₹110.

Amazon's own example: 3.5 kg on Easy Ship costs ₹112 + ₹34 + ₹34 = ₹180. For items under ₹300 on Easy Ship, Amazon's fee changes page says shipping is ₹10 lower on every weight. Amazon does not say whether the table above already includes this; your seller dashboard shows the rate.

Cancelling an Easy Ship or Self Ship order under ₹10,000 yourself now costs 10% of the order value plus GST: ₹58.88 on ₹499, since 17 August 2026. More: what cancelling costs. When the money reaches your bank: when each marketplace pays. How Amazon compares with Flipkart and Meesho: zero commission in 2026.
